The joint initiative is specifically designed to curb the alarming rate of drug abuse and illicit substance use within state-owned housing estates and surrounding communities.
This strategic collaboration recognizes that drug abuse is a major factor undermining community security and impacting the productivity of the state’s large youth population. By focusing on Lagos housing estates, the government and NDLEA aim to dismantle drug supply networks and implement robust demand reduction strategies right where families live.
NDLEA officers, supported by relevant state agencies, will conduct targeted, intelligence-led operations to identify and prosecute drug traffickers and peddlers operating within the estates. The goal is to choke the supply of illicit narcotics and substances.
A key component will be aggressive War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaigns. These educational outreach programmes will target tenants, youth, community development associations (CDAs), and religious leaders to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and encourage reporting.
The Lagos State government is prioritizing the creation of accessible support and rehabilitation services. This involves working with the NDLEA's existing counselling framework to provide psychosocial support and treatment referrals for affected residents, emphasizing that rehabilitation is a critical part of the solution.
Recognising that young people are most vulnerable, the initiative will include youth-focused programs aimed at redirecting energy towards productive activities, mentorship, and skills acquisition, thereby discouraging drug use.
A senior official from the Lagos State Ministry of Housing emphasized the importance of a secure and healthy environment for residents. "Our state-owned housing estates are designed to be safe havens for families. This partnership with the NDLEA is a decisive step to root out the menace of drug abuse that threatens the social fabric of our communities and the future of our youth."
The NDLEA Commander for Lagos Command reiterated the agency's commitment, urging residents to actively participate in the fight. "The war against drug abuse is a collective responsibility. We call on all Lagosians living in these estates to utilize the available confidential channels to report any drug-related activity. Together, we can achieve a truly drug-free Lagos."
